Beyond the Paragraph: Assessing Systems Logic in the AI Age explores how generative AI is changing the evidentiary value of conventional assessment. Rather than arguing for the abandonment of writing, the author examines a more fundamental question: how can educators verify what learners genuinely understand, can apply, revise and defend when sophisticated written outputs can increasingly be generated with AI assistance?
The paper introduces Iterative System Modelling (ISM), a proposed assessment architecture that triangulates evidence across product, process and performance. Through system modelling, consequential revision, live perturbation and defence, ISM seeks to make learner reasoning, judgement and epistemic ownership more visible.
Positioned within current scholarship on assessment validity, systems thinking, evaluative judgement and AI-resilient assessment, the paper argues for a shift from assessing only what learners submit towards examining what they can model, test, adapt and justify.
